HAPPY   HALLOWEEN!

Leading up to the 6th grade's celebration on Friday, they worked on being "spooky" energy tycoons in science class, where we started our unit on Natural Resources. We learned the difference between renewable and non-renewable resources, examples of each, and read about some real-world examples of when energy resources go "bad"- read about the story of Centralia, PA here. We also learned about how the U.S has changed how we get our energy over the last 20 years- they might have asked you what energy source is used to heat their home.

For the past week, we've been working on projects where they are working in groups to choose a natural resource and write a proposal to sell a new town of 10,000 residents to their energy resource. They have to research benefits of the natural resource and address the town's mayor to convince them that their energy resource is the best fit for the town. They are also illustrating posters to show what the town would look like getting their energy from their resource. On Monday, the groups will make their presentations.

Reminders:

Winter Uniform begins on Monday, November 2nd

November is All Religions month at HCA. If you or someone you know would be willing to share with a class, a division, or multiple groups either in person, via zoom, or through a pre recorded clip, please email jmyers@holychildacademy.com , and we will make it as easy as possible.

Looking forward, December is All Families month, and January is Native Heritage month. Please email jmyers@holychildacademy.com if you have any ideas.

While the nation awaits election results, the sixth graders at HCA have a decision! In homeroom, they held a mock election and Joe Biden emerged as the winner. Lord Voldemort (a fictional character from Harry Potter) came in at a close second.  Ms. Zafiris's math class is hard at work tackling the division of fractions. Our sixth grade will soon be undertaking their very first science fair projects. For some inspiration, the students explored last year's projects. Soon they will propose their own research topics. Stay tuned to learn more about their investigations.  November 6, 2020 Parents - please fill out Pick Up patrol every morning, even if your child will not be attending school that day. 11/13 This week the 6th graders continued their exploration of natural resources in science class. After completing their energy project, we took a deeper dive into different sources of renewable energy. Biomass and nuclear energy are types that have a lot of potential, that scientists are still learning a lot about. Imagine being able to turn on a light bulb from energy from animal waste! Or being able to harness nuclear energy and travel through space- not a reality yet, but we saw the enormous energy potential by watching a video of solar flares. Next week we will do the always classic lab on cleaning up an oil spill. Announcements: Please arrive at school before 7:55 AM. April 30th

This week the 6th graders have been hard at work preparing for their CTP exams next week. In math class we spent time taking practice tests and reviewing our answers. The students have been working hard, but we still found time for fun during lunch and recess. Good luck on the CTP's next week, 6th grade!
