This week the 6th graders continued their exploration of natural resources in science class. After completing their energy project, we took a deeper dive into different sources of renewable energy. Biomass and nuclear energy are types that have a lot of potential, that scientists are still learning a lot about. Imagine being able to turn on a light bulb from energy from animal waste! Or being able to harness nuclear energy and travel through space- not a reality yet, but we saw the enormous energy potential by watching a video of solar flares. Next week we will do the always classic lab on cleaning up an oil spill.

This week the sixth-grade students presented research at their their very Science Fair Expo! We are all very proud of their inquiry skills, report writing, and public speaking.  In the midst of putting finishing touches on the Science Fair Expo presentations, they were hard at work on learning about the life cycle of stars. Rockin' It in Science Ok, sorry for the terrible pun. But after wrapping up our Mineral unit before Christmas, and spending the first week in January exploring what types of science careers are out there, the 6th graders have started looking at rocks. We've spent plenty of time looking at rock samples and learning about how rocks are classified, and today we started a new project to go deeper into what the different types of rocks look like that exist around the U.S. We are using the National Park Service as a resource to create "profiles" of rock formations in National Parks. How old is the rock, how did it form, what does it look like, and, to incorporate Native People's month into science class, who lived and used this land before European settlers? Next week we will continue our work on the project. I'm looking forward to what the students create!   The first few weeks of Earth Science has been all about how we use maps to understand the Earth as a whole. We learned about the different types of maps that exist, and how they show us different features of the Earth. We started the unit by mapping the school, and Ms. Zafiris tried to use the maps to get around her new school.              We then explored latitude and longitude, practicing interpreting the coordinates for different points on the Earth. Finally, we looked at topography maps. Taking a 3D landscape and putting it on a 2D map can be hard to comprehend, so we made physical topography maps using modeling clay and water (dyed blue to represent the ocean) and as our "sea level" rose, we drew contour line to map the landscape. This illustrated how the steeper a landscape is (either going up, or down into a valley!) the closer contour lines are, helping us to visualize and read topography maps.  And of course, you can't do sci...
