The 6th graders are starting a unit on soil! This will coincide with the Middle School's Planting Day next week. The science classroom will be turning green with plant life, and we'll be examining how soil affects the plants. Stay tuned for pictures of out plants in a couple of weeks!

  • March is Women’s History Month when we will be celebrating Women in history.  If you or someone you know would be willing to share with a class, a division , or multiple groups to enhance our celebration in any way, please email jmyers@holychildacademy.com , and we will make it as easy as possible. 

  • Looking forward, April is Arab American Heritage Month, and May is Asian and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month. If you have ideas or suggestions for our celebrations for those months, please email jmyers@holychildacademy.com.

  • March 17th will be a green and white Saint Patrick’s Day dress down day. 

  • Spirit Week will kick off with Dragon Day on March 19th and will continue into the next week.

  • DCVAC (Delaware County Victim Assistance Center) will be facilitating classroom presentations from March 15th through March 18th.

11/13 This week the 6th graders continued their exploration of natural resources in science class. After completing their energy project, we took a deeper dive into different sources of renewable energy. Biomass and nuclear energy are types that have a lot of potential, that scientists are still learning a lot about. Imagine being able to turn on a light bulb from energy from animal waste! Or being able to harness nuclear energy and travel through space- not a reality yet, but we saw the enormous energy potential by watching a video of solar flares. While the nation awaits election results, the sixth graders at HCA have a decision! In homeroom, they held a mock election and Joe Biden emerged as the winner. Lord Voldemort (a fictional character from Harry Potter) came in at a close second.  Ms. Zafiris's math class is hard at work tackling the division of fractions. Our sixth grade will soon be undertaking their very first science fair projects. For some inspiration, the students explored last year's projects. Soon they will propose their own research topics. From robots to Greek myths, our sixth graders are enjoying the wide array of subjects that middle school has to offer! In STEAM class, the students are working in rotations to explore robotics and control technology as well as scientific data and analysis. Arrington, Sophia, and Summer experiment with Ozobot. Sam and John use Scratch to code a knight animation. Izabella and Gabby use Google Earth to create maps of significant landmarks in Philadelphia.  As they work through each challenge, the students record their reflections in their online journals. In language arts class, the sixth grade is using D'Aulaires Book of Greek Myths to study figures from Greek mythology. This will give them background knowledge that they'll need in their next unit to tackle literature with many allusions to these Greek myths.  The sixth grade is studying the technique of continuous contour in art class.
