The 6th graders are starting a unit on soil! This will coincide with the Middle School's Planting Day next week. The science classroom will be turning green with plant life, and we'll be examining how soil affects the plants. Stay tuned for pictures of out plants in a couple of weeks!

  • March is Women’s History Month when we will be celebrating Women in history.  If you or someone you know would be willing to share with a class, a division , or multiple groups to enhance our celebration in any way, please email jmyers@holychildacademy.com , and we will make it as easy as possible. 

  • Looking forward, April is Arab American Heritage Month, and May is Asian and Pacific Islanders Heritage Month. If you have ideas or suggestions for our celebrations for those months, please email jmyers@holychildacademy.com.

  • March 17th will be a green and white Saint Patrick’s Day dress down day. 

  • Spirit Week will kick off with Dragon Day on March 19th and will continue into the next week.

  • DCVAC (Delaware County Victim Assistance Center) will be facilitating classroom presentations from March 15th through March 18th.

The sixth grade students have had such a fantastic start to the 2020-2021 school year!  They are acclimating nicely to the new polices and procedures. We welcomed four new students to the class this year: Sam, Summer, Ariana and John.   The students learned more about each other in Next Steps class using partner interviews.  In partner pairs, students interviewed each other and then presented their partner to the class.  We discovered interesting things about each other including where they would travel if given the opportunity and what they would do with a million dollars! Sam and Lauren  Aidan and Ariana Sophia and Christopher (virtually!) This week the sixth-grade students presented research at their their very Science Fair Expo! We are all very proud of their inquiry skills, report writing, and public speaking.  In the midst of putting finishing touches on the Science Fair Expo presentations, they were hard at work on learning about the life cycle of stars. Check out their research and models below! The middle school has been loving outdoor recess in the sunshine!   The first few weeks of Earth Science has been all about how we use maps to understand the Earth as a whole. We learned about the different types of maps that exist, and how they show us different features of the Earth. We started the unit by mapping the school, and Ms. Zafiris tried to use the maps to get around her new school.              We then explored latitude and longitude, practicing interpreting the coordinates for different points on the Earth. Finally, we looked at topography maps. Taking a 3D landscape and putting it on a 2D map can be hard to comprehend, so we made physical topography maps using modeling clay and water (dyed blue to represent the ocean) and as our "sea level" rose, we drew contour line to map the landscape. This illustrated how the steeper a landscape is (either going up, or down into a valley!) the closer contour lines are, helping us to visualize and read topography maps.  And of course, you can't do sci...
