 Happy Spring! Highlights from Planting Day:

Last Friday, the entire school participated in Planting Day. From Early Childhood through 8th grade, the students came together to plant the seeds that will become HCA's Organic Garden this summer. Early Childhood looked at root gardens and planted carrots, radishes, and onions. Lower School planted marigolds to take home. Middle School led the charge in planting the vegetables. We planted: tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, peas, sweet peppers, zucchini, carrot, spinach, radish, and lettuce. 

The 6th grade incorporated their unit on soil into Planting Day. We took soil samples from the Organic Garden and tested the soil's texture and fertility. The consensus is that we have sandy loam, which is soil with very little clay, but healthy levels of sand and silt. Below are photos of the progress our tiny plants have already made! Everything is kept in the science lab until the weather is warm enough to put them in their homes outside. 


















On St. Patrick's Day we tested how different particles in soil regulates water. Green water, of course!

The sixth grade students have had such a fantastic start to the 2020-2021 school year!  They are acclimating nicely to the new polices and procedures. We welcomed four new students to the class this year: Sam, Summer, Ariana and John.   The students learned more about each other in Next Steps class using partner interviews.  In partner pairs, students interviewed each other and then presented their partner to the class.  We discovered interesting things about each other including where they would travel if given the opportunity and what they would do with a million dollars! 11/13 This week the 6th graders continued their exploration of natural resources in science class. After completing their energy project, we took a deeper dive into different sources of renewable energy. Biomass and nuclear energy are types that have a lot of potential, that scientists are still learning a lot about. Imagine being able to turn on a light bulb from energy from animal waste! Or being able to harness nuclear energy and travel through space- not a reality yet, but we saw the enormous energy potential by watching a video of solar flares. Next week we will do the always classic lab on cleaning up an oil spill. Announcements: Please arrive at school before 7:55 AM. PreAlgebra Financial Literacy Unit

The students in Mrs. Zwilling's PreAlgebra class have started a year-long unit on financial literacy.  In this unit students will practice and learn mathematical calculations involving decimals, percents, negative integers, and order of operations.  They will apply these skills to financial calculations including balancing a check register, creating a budget, adding sales tax to a purchase price (percent increase), determining the sale price (percent decrease), and determining simple and compound interest.  They will use the probability and statistics they learn later in the year to look at financial reports and stock market data.
