April 9, 2021

This past Tuesday middle school students had the opportunity to hear from guest speaker Dr. Stephanie Nnadi Northrop. Dr. Nnadi Northrop is a professor in the Department of Biology at Montgomery County Community College, as well as an HCA parent and board member. Students learned about what led her into a STEM career and they had lots of questions about careers that they are considering.

In language art class, the sixth-graders are planning their personal narratives. Check back for some snippets on a later blog!

Rockin' It in Science Ok, sorry for the terrible pun. But after wrapping up our Mineral unit before Christmas, and spending the first week in January exploring what types of science careers are out there, the 6th graders have started looking at rocks. We've spent plenty of time looking at rock samples and learning about how rocks are classified, and today we started a new project to go deeper into what the different types of rocks look like that exist around the U.S. We are using the National Park Service as a resource to create "profiles" of rock formations in National Parks. How old is the rock, how did it form, what does it look like, and, to incorporate Native People's month into science class, who lived and used this land before European settlers? Next week we will continue our work on the project. I'm looking forward to what the students create! Blog Reminders:   January 22, 2021 January 27th is picture day and FREE DRESS for students; 7th and 8th grade
The End is Near! The 6th graders have been working hard this week at preparing for their finals. With less than two weeks of school left in the year, they are so close to becoming 7th graders! Before they wrap up the year though, they presented their group projects on another ending- the end of a star's life. The projects that they worked on during science class last week were wonderfully creative and unique, and we had fun learning about the life cycles of different sized stars during the presentations.

STEAM Fun

This week Grade 6 had the rare opportunity to all be in the Lab at the same time.  They spent the time engaged in a St. Patrick's Day challenge to create leprechaun traps.  They enjoyed working in-person with students from the other group.   Their projects were creative, resourceful,,,,,, and glittery!
