Happy Spring! Highlights from Planting Day: Last Friday, the entire school participated in Planting Day. From Early Childhood through 8th grade, the students came together to plant the seeds that will become HCA's Organic Garden this summer. Early Childhood looked at root gardens and planted carrots, radishes, and onions. Lower School planted marigolds to take home. Middle School led the charge in planting the vegetables. We planted: tomatoes, cucumbers, green beans, peas, sweet peppers, zucchini, carrot, spinach, radish, and lettuce.  The 6th grade incorporated their unit on soil into Planting Day. We took soil samples from the Organic Garden and tested the soil's texture and fertility. The consensus is that we have sandy loam, which is soil with very little clay, but healthy levels of sand and silt. Below are photos of the progress our tiny plants have already made! Everything is kept in the science lab until the weather is warm enough to put them in their homes outside....

STEAM Fun

This week Grade 6 had the rare opportunity to all be in the Lab at the same time.  They spent the time engaged in a St. Patrick's Day challenge to create leprechaun traps.  They enjoyed working in-person with students from the other group.   Their projects were creative, resourceful,,,,,, and glittery!
The 6th graders are starting a unit on soil! This will coincide with the Middle School's Planting Day next week. The science classroom will be turning green with plant life, and we'll be examining how soil affects the plants. Stay tuned for pictures of out plants in a couple of weeks! In social studies class, our sixth grade students are studying Russia. They are discussing Russia’s development and economy and working on map skills!
Science Fair time! This week, the 6th and 7th graders are getting ready to start their science fair experiments. With a date set at the end of April for them to show off their projects, now is a critical time to execute everything they've been working towards this year. For the 6th graders, the science fair can be a daunting task. As newcomers to the project, we spent some time last week hearing advice from the more experienced 7th graders. The 6th graders were able to ask questions and hear about the experience from kids who have already been through the process. Now let's start experimenting!
